About Montréal-Trudeau (YUL)

Montréal-Trudeau is Canada's third-busiest airport — 22.4 million passengers in 2025 — and the main hub of Air Canada and Air Transat. It sits in Dorval, about 20 km west of downtown, 20–45 minutes by road depending on traffic. Everything runs from a single terminal with three sectors: domestic, international and transborder (US). A major terminal expansion is under way through the late 2020s, so expect curbside congestion at peak times.

Two planning points matter. First, YUL has US preclearance: on flights to the United States you clear American immigration and customs before boarding and land as a domestic arrival — arrive about 3 hours early. Second, there is no rail link yet: the REM light-rail station at the airport is under construction and expected to open by late 2027, promising a ~20-minute ride downtown.

Until then, the 747 Express bus is the best-value ride in North American aviation: CAD $11.25, running 24/7 to downtown and Berri-UQAM — and the fare is actually a 24-hour pass for the whole bus, métro and Zone A network. Buy it from the machines in arrivals or the Chrono app; on board it's exact coins only. Taxis charge a fixed CAD $49.45 to downtown (CAD $56.70 at night), with Uber and Eva at similar prices.

Official network names

  • .YUL Wi-FiOfficial network — note the leading dot. 60 minutes per session; the airport's own help page says to simply start a new session for more time.

Connect only to these exact network names — lookalike hotspots at airports are a common phishing trick.

Good to know

  • Select ".YUL Wi-Fi" (note the leading dot), open a browser and accept the terms — authentication is via your email address.
  • Each session gives up to 60 minutes; ADM's official line is "for more time, simply start a new session", so free access is effectively unlimited via renewals.
  • Coverage is terminal-wide, both public and post-security areas.
  • The hotspot is open (unencrypted) — keep sensitive logins for a VPN or your mobile data, and check the portal shows ADM/YUL branding before entering your email.

This airport uses a WiFi sign-in page

You will pass through a captive portal — a web page — before you get online. It is worth treating as untrusted: a legitimate one asks you to accept terms, enter an email or type an SMS code. It never asks you to install an update or run a command.

Shared network · security

Shared airport WiFi. A VPN encrypts your traffic once you're on it.

On a shared network, anyone nearby can see which sites you open. A VPN encrypts your traffic after you're connected, and lets you reach home banking and apps that block foreign IPs. It does not cover the sign-in page itself, or anything you're persuaded to install.
