- Italy applies the Schengen common visa policy. Whether a visa is required depends on nationality, country of residence, purpose and duration of stay — use the official portal's guided questionnaire to check a specific case.
- Short-stay visas (up to 90 days) come in three types: VSU (Uniform Schengen Visa, valid across all Schengen states), VTL (Limited Territoriality Visa, valid only for Italy or select states), and VTA (Airport Transit Visa, airport transit only). Long-stay National Visas (VN, Type D) cover 91–365 days and are valid only in Italy.
- Applicants must demonstrate adequate financial means for the stay; within 8 working days of arrival, non-EU foreigners must request a residence permit or declare their presence per their visa conditions.
- The official portal does not publish the visa fee amount directly — consular pages reference a separate 'Consular Fees' schedule. A consulate page (Chicago) notes Schengen short-stay visa applicants need medical coverage abroad of at least $50,000 for the trip duration.
