JFK Airport: A Traveler's Quick-Start Guide

John F. Kennedy International Airport sits on Jamaica Bay in Queens, about 15 miles from Midtown Manhattan, and it's really six terminals (1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) operating almost like separate small airports, each with its own security checkpoints and food halls. There's no single "international terminal" — foreign carriers are scattered across several buildings, so always check your terminal number on your boarding pass rather than assuming.

Arriving and clearing immigration

If you're flying in internationally, expect a walk to immigration, a queue at the passport kiosks or with a CBP officer, then baggage claim and customs. JFK's federal inspection facilities are large and modern, but volume varies wildly by time of day — afternoon and evening arrival banks from Europe and Asia can mean 45-60 minutes from gate to curb, while a quiet mid-morning arrival might take 20. If you're connecting onward internationally-to-domestic, budget at least 2 hours with no terminal change and 3 hours if you need to switch terminals; domestic-to-domestic connections are comfortable at 1 hour if you're staying in the same terminal.

Getting into the city

The cheapest and often fastest way into Manhattan is the AirTrain (about $8.75, paid by tapping a contactless card or phone at the turnstile) to either Jamaica Station or Howard Beach, where you transfer to the subway or Long Island Rail Road. AirTrain to Jamaica plus the LIRR into Penn Station takes roughly 45-50 minutes total and is the fastest low-cost option if your hotel is near Midtown; the subway (E or A/J lines) is cheaper but slower, more like 60-75 minutes to Manhattan. Yellow cabs charge a flat rate to/from Manhattan (plus tolls and tip) and take 45-60 minutes outside rush hour, longer during it. Uber and Lyft pick up from a designated ground transportation area at each terminal and cost roughly similar to a cab, with surge pricing at peak times.

Practical tips

Carry some cash or a tap-to-pay card for AirTrain and tolls — MetroCard machines are being phased out in favor of OMNY contactless payment. If you're delayed, note that all terminals have decent food options but Terminal 4 and Terminal 8 have the widest selection. Given how spread out JFK is, always build in extra time for security lines during peak transatlantic departure banks in the early evening.

Official network names

  • _Free JFK WiFiOfficial free network across all terminals; airline lounges have separate members-only networks.

Connect only to these exact network names — lookalike hotspots at airports are a common phishing trick.

Good to know

  • Select "_Free JFK WiFi" from the network list — no password is needed, just accept the terms when the browser page appears.
  • The SSID occasionally changes between refreshes, so double-check the exact name in your WiFi list on arrival.
  • Coverage and speed can dip in older terminal areas during peak departure banks; a VPN is recommended if handling anything sensitive.
  • First/business class and airline-status travelers can use faster, less congested WiFi inside airline lounges instead.
  • For support call +1 (800) 880-4117, available 24/7.

This airport uses a WiFi sign-in page

You will pass through a captive portal — a web page — before you get online. It is worth treating as untrusted: a legitimate one asks you to accept terms, enter an email or type an SMS code. It never asks you to install an update or run a command.

Shared airport WiFi. A VPN encrypts your traffic once you're on it.

On a shared network, anyone nearby can see which sites you open. A VPN encrypts your traffic after you're connected, and lets you reach home banking and apps that block foreign IPs. It does not cover the sign-in page itself, or anything you're persuaded to install.
