Istanbul Airport (IST): A Traveler's Guide

Istanbul Airport (IST) is one of the world's busiest hubs, built as a single sprawling terminal on the European side of the city, about 35-40 km from the historic center. Expect a lot of walking between check-in, security, and far-flung gates — budget extra time, especially for early-morning departures when the terminal gets crowded.

Immigration and connections

Most nationalities can enter Turkey visa-free or via e-Visa (apply online before you fly if required — don't count on getting one on arrival). Passport control lines can run long at peak hours, particularly for arriving flights in the evening. If you're connecting, Turkish Airlines' hub-and-spoke schedule means many transfers are tight; check whether your connection requires a full security re-screening (it usually does for international-to-international transfers) and budget at least 90 minutes minimum connection time, more at peak periods.

Getting into the city

The M11 metro line runs directly from the airport to Gayrettepe, where it connects into Istanbul's wider metro network toward Taksim, Şişli, and beyond — a reliable, traffic-proof way into town that takes roughly 40-50 minutes to central districts once you factor in the connection. The HAVAIST shuttle bus network is the other popular option, with routes to Taksim, Beşiktaş, Sultanahmet, and other central points; the airport advertises the Taksim-Beşiktaş orange line as reaching Beşiktaş Square in around 15 minutes of actual driving time, though total journey time including boarding and traffic is usually closer to an hour. Taxis and ride-hailing are available just outside arrivals but are the slowest and most expensive option in Istanbul's notorious traffic, especially during weekday rush hours.

Practical tips

  • Buy an Istanbulkart (the city's rechargeable transit card) at the airport metro station — it works on the metro, buses, trams, and ferries and is far simpler than buying single tickets.
  • If you're heading to Sultanahmet (the Old City) rather than Taksim, factor in the extra tram or bus leg from the M11/M2 network — there's no single direct line yet.
  • İstanbul Airport also serves as an alternative arrival point to Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side; the two airports are roughly 90 minutes apart by road, so double-check which one your flight actually uses.
  • Currency exchange and ATMs are plentiful throughout the terminal, but rates are typically better in the city — withdraw only what you need for transport and a meal.

How to connect

SMS codes work with foreign numbers

Official network names

  • iGA WiFiOfficial iGA network. A separate free "TurkTelekom" Wi-Fi is also available in the terminal.

Connect only to these exact network names — lookalike hotspots at airports are a common phishing trick.

Good to know

  • Select the "iGA WiFi" network and log in with your mobile number (a code arrives by SMS) or with an access code from a terminal kiosk.
  • Kiosks scan your passport/ID and print an access code — handy if your SIM can't receive SMS.
  • Internet is free and unlimited with no time cap.
  • Foreign numbers work: choose your country code on the login portal before entering your number.

This airport uses a WiFi sign-in page

You will pass through a captive portal — a web page — before you get online. It is worth treating as untrusted: a legitimate one asks you to accept terms, enter an email or type an SMS code. It never asks you to install an update or run a command.

On a shared network, anyone nearby can see which sites you open. A VPN encrypts your traffic after you're connected, and lets you reach home banking and apps that block foreign IPs. It does not cover the sign-in page itself, or anything you're persuaded to install.
