About Zayed International (AUH)

Zayed International Airport is the UAE's second-largest airport and Etihad Airways' home base, linking more than 120 destinations with over 30 airlines. It was renamed in honour of Sheikh Zayed in 2024, so older tickets, signs and maps may still say Abu Dhabi International — it is the same airport. It sits roughly 30 km east of the city centre, between Abu Dhabi island and the Yas / Saadiyat islands.

Since November 2023 essentially all passenger flights use one enormous building, Terminal A — built for 45 million passengers a year and 11,000 an hour, with 163 shops and restaurants across 35,000 m². It is one of the largest terminals in the world, so the walk from security to a far gate can take 15–20 minutes; keep an eye on the screens rather than settling into duty free. Terminal A also runs all nine biometric touchpoints ('Smart Travel'), so your face can stand in for passport and boarding pass at check-in, bag drop, immigration and the gate.

Getting to and from the city: bus A1 runs 24/7 to Al Zahiyah in the centre for about AED 4, but you need a Hafilat card from the machines by the stop — drivers take no cash. Taxis queue outside arrivals. For Dubai, the hourly Airport Express to Ibn Battuta Bus Station takes about 90 minutes, with tickets sold at a counter in the arrivals hall. One thing to plan for: AUH has US pre-clearance, so if you are flying to the United States you complete American immigration in Abu Dhabi and land as a domestic arrival — budget extra time before departure.

Official network names

  • Zayed International Airport Free WifiTerminal AOfficial free network, advertised as complimentary and unlimited across the whole airport. Connect, then tap 'Connect' in the welcome box — you land on the airport's own website.

Connect only to these exact network names — lookalike hotspots at airports are a common phishing trick.

Good to know

  • Select "Zayed International Airport Free Wifi", then tap Connect when the welcome box appears — no registration, password or email needed.
  • The airport advertises the service as complimentary and unlimited, with no session time limit anywhere inside Terminal A.
  • It runs on the airport's high-speed 'Super-Fi' network, specced at up to 200 Mbps per user, so video streaming and large downloads are realistic.
  • UAE networks — airport Wi-Fi included — still block WhatsApp, FaceTime and Messenger voice/video calls; licensed apps such as BOTIM work, so agree a backup channel before you land.
  • Terminal A is a single huge building, so budget extra walking time between security and the gate; the Wi-Fi follows you the whole way.
  • Avoid lookalike hotspots: the official name is spelled exactly "Zayed International Airport Free Wifi" and the portal must land on the airport's own website before you enter anything.

This airport uses a WiFi sign-in page

You will pass through a captive portal — a web page — before you get online. It is worth treating as untrusted: a legitimate one asks you to accept terms, enter an email or type an SMS code. It never asks you to install an update or run a command.

Shared airport WiFi. A VPN encrypts your traffic once you're on it.

On a shared network, anyone nearby can see which sites you open. A VPN encrypts your traffic after you're connected, and lets you reach home banking and apps that block foreign IPs. It does not cover the sign-in page itself, or anything you're persuaded to install.
