- Most foreign nationals must obtain a visa in advance from an Algerian diplomatic or consular post before travelling; only nationals specifically exempt from the visa requirement are excepted. Algeria does not offer a general visa on arrival.
- Visa categories include tourist, business, study, work, temporary work, family, medical, cultural, transit, press and diplomatic/service/courtesy visas.
- Applicants submit a form (downloaded from the relevant embassy/consulate website and completed in duplicate) together with a passport valid for at least six months, photographs and documents specific to the visa type, to the Algerian mission covering their place of residence.
- Tourist-visa applications must include either a certificate of accommodation legalised by the town hall in Algeria, a hotel reservation, or a travel-agency certificate. For tourists travelling with an organised agency, the visa is issued within 48 hours of the consular post receiving a complete file.
