- Nationals of the US, UK, EU/Schengen states, Australia, Canada and roughly 68 other jurisdictions may enter visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism, business or visiting friends/relatives (no paid activities). Passport must be valid for the stay.
- As of July 2026 there is NO pre-travel authorization (no ETA) required for visa-exempt visitors. JESTA has been legislated but is NOT yet operational; it is targeted to launch in Japan's fiscal year 2028.
- The Japan eVISA is a separate online single-entry short-term visa for nationals of select countries; it is not the same as JESTA.
- Travellers who need a visa must apply at a Japanese Embassy or Consulate.
