- Most non-ECOWAS visitors need a visa. Apply online through the official e-Visa portal before you travel — the short-stay visa covers tourism, business and family visits for a stay of up to 90 days.
- The e-Visa portal (applicant.visaburkina.bf) launched in August 2023 and is the recommended route. Visa on arrival is now granted only in exceptional circumstances, so do not rely on it.
- Tourist visa fees: 33,000 F CFA (~€50) single entry or 55,000 F CFA (~€84) multiple entry; an express option for emergency travel costs 104,500 F CFA. A confirmed hotel reservation is required for the tourist visa.
- Required documents: a valid passport, a completed application form, two recent 3.5 × 4.5 cm colour photos on a white background, proof of the purpose of the stay, a medical certificate stating you have no contagious disease, and health insurance covering your stay.
- A yellow-fever vaccination certificate is mandatory to enter Burkina Faso — carry your International Certificate of Vaccination.
- ECOWAS nationals (Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Togo and others) do not need a visa. South African passport holders always need a visa before arrival, including for transit.
- Only use the official portal visaburkina.bf — many look-alike agency sites add a mark-up. Fees are set by the Ministry of Security.
- Important: since late December 2025 Burkina Faso has barred entry and transit for United States nationals. Security conditions are volatile — check the latest entry rules and your government's travel advisory before booking.
