EES & ETIAS: Europe’s new border checks
Two systems change how non-EU visitors cross the external border of the 29-country Schengen area: EES (already running) registers you biometrically, and ETIAS (coming) pre-screens you online before you travel.
EES — Entry/Exit System
Since April 2026 the EES is fully operational at every external Schengen border (the rollout began in October 2025). Non-EU visitors on short stays are registered with fingerprints and a facial image on first crossing; passport stamps are replaced by digital records.
The system automatically tracks your 90/180 balance — overstays become visible at every border post. First registration takes a few extra minutes; later crossings are faster.
ETIAS — Travel authorisation
ETIAS is an online pre-travel screening for visa-exempt visitors, similar to the US ESTA. You apply online or via the app, pay €20, and most applications are approved within minutes.
It’s not a visa: it doesn’t change the 90/180 rule, it just becomes a prerequisite for boarding. During the first transitional months after launch, travelling without ETIAS will still be possible.
Valid 3 years
Or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Multiple trips on one authorisation.
Visa-exempt visitors
Nationals of some 60 visa-free countries (US, UK, Japan, Brazil …) travelling to any of the 29 Schengen countries plus Cyprus.
€20 online
Fee waived for under-18s and over-70s. Apply via the official EU website or app — beware of lookalike sites.

EU/EEA/Swiss citizens: nothing changes. Visa-exempt visitors: EES now, ETIAS once it becomes mandatory (expected in 2027 after a grace period). Visa holders: EES applies, ETIAS doesn’t — your visa already covers the screening.

No — it’s a lightweight online authorisation for travellers who don’t need a visa. Visa-required nationals keep applying for a Schengen visa instead.
It’s expected to launch in late 2026 with a transitional period of about six months, then a further grace period — so enforcement is expected during 2027. Watch the official EU announcements.
Everyone crossing the external border is registered in the EES (children under 12 give no fingerprints). ETIAS applies to all ages but is free under 18.
No. ETIAS is only for visa-exempt travellers. Visa and permit holders are screened through their existing application; EES registration still applies to visa holders.
