How the 90/180 rule works
On any given day, look back 180 days: your days of presence inside the area during that window must not exceed 90. The window rolls forward daily — it never resets on entry, exit or new year.
Every day counts: arrival day, departure day, and days in any member country all draw from one shared allowance. The rule applies to visa-exempt visitors and short-stay visa holders; EU/EEA/Swiss citizens and residence-permit holders are outside it.
Frequently asked questions
No. The window keeps rolling: days only stop counting once they’re more than 180 days in the past. Leaving and re-entering doesn’t restart anything.
Yes — both count as full days of presence, even if you land at 23:50 or fly out at 06:00.
For the whole area combined. Ten days in France, then twenty in Italy: thirty days used from the same 90-day allowance.
