Shenzhen Bao'an Airport: A Traveler's Guide

Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport (SZX) sits on the coast west of the city, across the bay from Hong Kong, and works almost entirely out of one large terminal — Terminal 3, the striking manta-ray-shaped building most photos of the airport show. Domestic and international check-in, security and gates are grouped by concourse rather than separate buildings, so once you're through security you rarely need to backtrack far to find your gate.

Immigration and security

If you're arriving internationally, expect a fairly efficient but occasionally long immigration queue, especially on evening arrival banks. China now offers 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit for many nationalities connecting through Shenzhen to a third country, and a growing list of nationalities get short visa-free stays — check your eligibility before you fly, since rules have changed frequently in recent years. Security screening is standard (laptops and liquids out), and outbound international security tends to move faster than the morning domestic rush.

Getting into the city

The easiest way downtown is Shenzhen Metro Line 11, which runs directly from the airport to Futian (the CBD) in well under 40 minutes for a few yuan in an ordinary carriage, or a bit more in the quieter business-class car — it's cheap, frequent, and avoids traffic entirely. A taxi to downtown or Futian takes roughly 45–60 minutes depending on traffic and runs somewhere in the RMB 100–150 range; ride-hailing apps (Didi) work well and are usually cheaper than a hailed cab. If you're continuing to Hong Kong, both Luohu and Shenzhen Bay land border crossings are reachable by metro or taxi in under an hour.

Practical tips

The single biggest thing to plan around in Shenzhen is the internet: mainland China blocks Google, Gmail, Maps, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and most Western news and social apps behind the Great Firewall. If you'll need any of these, install and test a VPN before you leave home — VPN provider websites and app stores are frequently blocked once you're in China, so downloading one at the gate is a bad plan. Bring an offline map or Baidu/Amap as a backup, and use WeChat Pay or Alipay (with a foreign card linked) for anything cashless, since it's the default everywhere. If you're short on time, note that Terminal 3's domestic and international zones are both large; give yourself extra buffer for a same-terminal connection during peak morning and evening banks, and keep your boarding pass and passport handy through the multiple document checks on the way to international gates.

Noms de réseau officiels

  • Airport-ShenZhen-Free

Connecte-toi uniquement à ces noms de réseau exacts — les faux hotspots dans les aéroports sont une arnaque de phishing courante.

Bon à savoir

  • Select "Airport-ShenZhen-Free", then verify via SMS to a mobile number (200+ countries supported) or get a code by scanning your passport or boarding pass at a self-service kiosk.
  • Mainland China blocks Google, Gmail, Maps, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and most Western news/social apps — install and test your VPN before you land, since VPN provider sites and app stores are themselves often blocked here.
  • A VPN over airport Wi-Fi can be slow or intermittently interrupted; don't rely on it for anything time-sensitive like a video call or a mobile boarding pass download.
  • The network is free around the clock with no separate paid tier or time cap.
  • If you need dependable data beyond the terminal, China Unicom/China Mobile counters in arrivals sell tourist SIMs and eSIMs.
