Before you pack

Coming to Edinburgh for the Fringe? If you're not a UK/Irish national, check whether you need a UK ETA before you fly — it's electronic, usually approved within minutes, and covers all of the UK including Scotland.

Rules at the gate

What the venue lets in

The practical, easy-to-miss rules that decide what you can actually bring.

Pack for changeable weather

Late-August Edinburgh typically runs 15-25°C with real chances of rain even on a sunny forecast — pack a light rain layer alongside summer clothes.

UK ETA covers all of Scotland

A single UK Electronic Travel Authorisation is valid for the whole United Kingdom, so no separate Scotland-specific entry document is needed.

Airports for Edinburgh

Edinburgh (EDI)

Scotland's busiest airport, 13 km west of the centre. The tram runs to Princes Street in about 35 minutes; during the Fringe it is far more predictable than a taxi through a closed-off Old Town.

Glasgow (GLA)

instead of Edinburgh (EDI)

In August, Edinburgh beds and flights both spike. Glasgow is roughly 90 minutes door to door (airport bus plus the frequent Queen Street–Waverley train) and often much cheaper to fly into.
