Chengdu Tianfu International Airport: A First-Timer's Guide

Opened in 2021, Tianfu (TFU) is Chengdu's newer, larger airport, sitting about 50km southeast of downtown in Jianyang — noticeably further out than the older Shuangliu (CTU) airport across town. Most international long-haul flights and a growing share of domestic routes now use Tianfu, so double-check which of the two airports your ticket actually lists; they are not interchangeable, and transferring between them takes 60–90 minutes plus rechecking bags.

Terminals and immigration

TFU has two large terminals, T1 and T2, both handling a mix of domestic and international traffic depending on the airline, so verify your terminal when you check in online. Foreign arrivals clear immigration and customs at whichever airport they land at first, even if Chengdu isn't the final stop — processing usually takes 10–40 minutes, with staffed desks for first-time visitors and e-channels for returning travelers with the right documents. China's 30-day unilateral visa-free policy currently covers a long list of countries (much of Europe, plus Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, several Gulf states and South American countries) through the end of 2026, and a broader 240-hour visa-free transit rule lets eligible travelers connect onward within Sichuan and neighboring regions without a visa — but check your nationality against the current list before you fly, since these rules do shift.

Getting into the city

The fastest way downtown is Chengdu Metro Line 18's express service, which runs non-stop to Chengdu South Railway Station in about 35 minutes for ¥10; from there, Lines 1 or 7 fan out to central spots like Tianfu Square or Kuanzhai Alley. A regular high-speed rail link also reaches Chengdu East Railway Station in around 30 minutes. Taxis and rideshare take 1–1.5 hours depending on traffic and cost roughly ¥150–200 plus expressway tolls — worth it if you're carrying heavy luggage. Airport buses are the budget option, at ¥15–25 depending on time of day, running to hubs like Chunxi Road and Chengdu Zoo.

Practical tips

Install and test your VPN before you land — China's Great Firewall blocks Google, WhatsApp, Instagram and most Western apps and news sites, and the app stores/websites you'd need to install a VPN are themselves blocked once you're inside the country. If you're connecting between TFU and CTU, don't cut it close: allow at least 4.5 hours minimum (6 hours recommended) since it involves a taxi or metro ride across the city plus a fresh security screening. Cash still matters in pockets of China where mobile payment apps (Alipay/WeChat Pay) need a local bank-linked account, so carry some yuan and consider a Chinese SIM or eSIM for maps and translation apps that work locally.

Official network names

  • TFairport-Free-WiFiLog in via passport-scan kiosk or by SMS verification code
  • Free Wi-Fi at Tianfu International AirportUsed with the ID-card queuing-machine login method

Connect only to these exact network names — lookalike hotspots at airports are a common phishing trick.

Good to know

  • Free with no time limit; log in via the SMS code, passport-scan kiosk, or Chinese ID-card kiosk — all foreign passports work with the SMS or passport-kiosk options.
  • Great Firewall restrictions apply on this network exactly as everywhere else in mainland China: Google, Gmail, Maps, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and most Western news/social sites are blocked.
  • Install and test your VPN before you fly — most VPN provider websites and app stores are themselves blocked once you're in China, so you can't sign up after landing.
  • Speeds are generally solid for browsing and messaging apps like WeChat, but expect a slower, less reliable connection than at home for anything routed through a VPN.
  • If the SMS option fails for a foreign number, use the passport-scan kiosk instead — it prints login credentials directly.

This airport uses a WiFi sign-in page

You will pass through a captive portal — a web page — before you get online. It is worth treating as untrusted: a legitimate one asks you to accept terms, enter an email or type an SMS code. It never asks you to install an update or run a command.

Shared network · security

Shared airport WiFi. A VPN encrypts your traffic once you're on it.

On a shared network, anyone nearby can see which sites you open. A VPN encrypts your traffic after you're connected, and lets you reach home banking and apps that block foreign IPs. It does not cover the sign-in page itself, or anything you're persuaded to install.
