Singapore Changi Airport: A Traveler's Guide to SIN

Changi is routinely ranked among the world's best airports, and it earns it: four terminals (T1-T4) linked by a free Skytrain, plus the Jewel complex with its indoor waterfall and gardens sitting right between T1 and the rest of the campus. If you have a layover of more than a couple of hours, Jewel is genuinely worth the walk — it's landside, so anyone can visit, though transit passengers without a visa-free entry should check they're allowed to leave the transit area first.

Immigration, customs and security

Singapore's immigration process is fast and heavily automated: most passport holders can use the automated gates, and the whole arrival process — immigration plus baggage claim — often takes well under 30 minutes outside of peak banks of flights. Security for departure is efficient too, but Changi is a major connecting hub, so build normal buffer time for a same-terminal connection (about 45-60 minutes) and more if you're switching terminals, since some connections require re-clearing security.

Getting into the city

The MRT (subway) is the cheapest and most predictable way in: the Changi Airport station on the East West Line (with a change at Tanah Merah for most services) gets you to the city center — Raffles Place or City Hall — in around 30-45 minutes for a fare of a few Singapore dollars, payable by tapping a contactless card or phone. Taxis and ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available at clearly marked stands outside each terminal and typically cost SGD 30-50 to downtown, taking 20-30 minutes depending on traffic and time of day (there's a small airport surcharge on top of the metered fare). Airport shuttle buses also run to major hotel areas for a flat fee if you'd rather not navigate transfers with luggage.

Practical tips

Singapore's currency is the Singapore dollar; contactless cards are accepted almost everywhere, so you don't strictly need cash, though a little is handy for hawker centers and small stalls. If you plan to buy a local SIM or eSIM, counters are available in the arrival halls of every terminal, and Singapore's mobile networks are fast and unrestricted — no VPN needed here, unlike some other stops in the region. Finally, Singapore enforces strict rules on bringing in items like chewing gum, tobacco and e-vaporizers, and there are severe penalties for drug offenses, so it's worth a quick check of what's in your bag before you land.

Official network names

  • #WiFi@ChangiOfficial free network in both public and transit areas

Connect only to these exact network names — lookalike hotspots at airports are a common phishing trick.

Good to know

  • Select "#WiFi@Changi", open any browser, and you'll be redirected to a click-through landing page — no registration, email or phone number is needed.
  • The free network covers both public (post-security-optional) and transit areas, so travellers on layovers who never clear immigration can still get online.
  • No published time limit or data cap — it's genuinely free and unlimited for the duration of your stay in the terminal.
  • If the free network feels slow during peak hours, Jewel Changi and most airline lounges offer their own separate WiFi as an alternative.
  • SIM/eSIM counters and vending machines are available landside if you want local mobile data instead.

This airport uses a WiFi sign-in page

You will pass through a captive portal — a web page — before you get online. It is worth treating as untrusted: a legitimate one asks you to accept terms, enter an email or type an SMS code. It never asks you to install an update or run a command.

Shared airport WiFi. A VPN encrypts your traffic once you're on it.

On a shared network, anyone nearby can see which sites you open. A VPN encrypts your traffic after you're connected, and lets you reach home banking and apps that block foreign IPs. It does not cover the sign-in page itself, or anything you're persuaded to install.
