Shanghai Pudong (PVG): A Traveler's Guide

Pudong International Airport (PVG) sits about 30 km east of downtown Shanghai on the Pudong side of the Huangpu River, and it's the country's busiest gateway for international flights. The airport has two main terminals, T1 and T2, plus satellite concourses S1 (linked to T1) and S2 (linked to T2), connected by an automated people mover (APM) — leave extra time if your arrival and departure gates are in different buildings, since walking between them isn't an option.

Immigration and security

Foreign arrivals go through health/temperature screening (occasionally), immigration, and customs in that order; e-gates are available to holders of Chinese ID and some registered foreign travelers, but most visitors will use staffed immigration counters, which can back up during peak evening arrival banks. China now grants unilateral 30-day visa-free entry to citizens of around 50 countries (the list has grown through 2026 and includes most of the EU, the UK, and Canada), and separately offers a 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit for travelers from a longer list of countries continuing on to a third country — both schemes have specific paperwork and regional rules, so confirm your eligibility against the current official list before you fly rather than assuming. On departure, security is standard but can be slow at peak times, so budget extra buffer beyond the usual two hours.

Getting into the city

The fastest option is the Shanghai Maglev, which covers the 30 km to Longyang Road station in 8 minutes at speeds up to 431 km/h (¥50 one-way, ¥40 with a same-day boarding pass); from Longyang Road you'll need Metro Line 2 for another 25–30 minutes to reach People's Square or the Bund. Metro Line 2 also runs directly from the airport itself, a slower but simpler one-transfer-free option taking roughly 60–75 minutes to People's Square for a few yuan. Taxis and ride-hail (Didi) into the city center take about 45–60 minutes depending on traffic and cost roughly ¥150–200; airport shuttle buses cover most districts for less. If you're headed straight for Shanghai Disney Resort rather than downtown, it's actually closer to PVG than the city center is — about 30–40 minutes by taxi.

Practical tips

Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram and most Western apps are blocked by China's firewall the moment you land, so set up and test a VPN before you travel — trying to download one from the airport Wi-Fi rarely works. If you're connecting between two international flights, build in a healthy buffer (2.5–3 hours minimum), since transfer passengers sometimes still need to reclear security between terminals or satellites. Cash is rarely used domestically — Alipay and WeChat Pay dominate — so set up a China-friendly payment app or carry a bit of cash for the taxi queue and small purchases before you can get a local SIM or eSIM sorted.

Good to know

  • Wi-Fi is free but needs ID verification: get a code by SMS to a Chinese mobile number, or use a passport-scan kiosk (near baggage claim and between gates 75-77) if you don't have a Chinese SIM.
  • Google, Gmail, Google Maps, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and most non-Chinese apps are blocked by China's firewall — install and test your VPN before you land, since VPN provider sites and app stores are often unreachable once you're on the network.
  • Sessions expire after a few hours and need re-verification; just repeat the SMS or passport-kiosk step to get a fresh code.
  • The exact network name shown varies by source and may differ between T1 and T2/satellites, so follow the on-screen instructions or kiosk signage rather than a fixed SSID.
  • If you can't get SMS or passport verification working, staffed information desks in the terminal can usually help set you up.

This airport uses a WiFi sign-in page

You will pass through a captive portal — a web page — before you get online. It is worth treating as untrusted: a legitimate one asks you to accept terms, enter an email or type an SMS code. It never asks you to install an update or run a command.
