Karachi Airport (KHI): A Traveler's Guide

Jinnah International Airport (KHI) is Pakistan's busiest gateway and the main port of entry for southern Pakistan. Operationally it's built around two working concourses under Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority control: the Jinnah East Satellite Concourse handles international arrivals and departures, while the Jinnah West Satellite Concourse is used mainly for domestic flights (with some international overflow). A separate Terminal 2 building is now dedicated to Hajj and Umrah charter operations, so regular scheduled travelers won't pass through it.

Before you fly: check your visa status

This is the single most important thing to sort out in advance. As of January 1, 2026, Pakistan suspended its free "Visa Prior to Arrival" facility that many nationalities previously relied on — most foreign travelers must now apply for an e-Visa online well before departure, with processing commonly taking 7–10 business days and a fee that varies by nationality. There are narrow exceptions (for example, Turkish nationals holding a valid Schengen, UK, or US visa can still get a visa on arrival), and a short list of countries, including Maldives and Nepal, get visa-free entry for short stays. Indian passport holders cannot get tourist visas at all. Don't assume you can sort a visa at the KHI counter — check the current rules for your passport on Pakistan's official e-Visa portal before you book.

Immigration, customs, and security

International arrivals go through immigration and baggage claim before a customs check; foreign currency above certain thresholds and any commercial-quantity goods should be declared. Processing can be slow during the late-night arrivals bank, when several wide-body flights land in close succession — budget extra time. For departures, expect a security screening at the terminal entrance in addition to the standard gate-side check, which is normal across Pakistani airports.

Getting into the city

Karachi has no direct airport rail link, but Karachi Cantonment Railway Station — the city's main hub for onward rail travel — is about 10 km/20–30 minutes away by road depending on traffic. Metered taxis, auto-rickshaws, and ride-hailing apps (Careem and Uber both operate here) wait at the arrivals forecourt; a ride to Clifton or Saddar in central Karachi typically runs 30–45 minutes and a few hundred to around a thousand Pakistani rupees by app-based ride-hailing, more by unmetered taxi if you don't negotiate first. Traffic is the main variable — avoid rush hour if your schedule allows it.

Practical tips

Agree on or confirm a fare before getting into any taxi that isn't running a meter or app, and keep small-denomination rupees on hand for tips and incidentals, since not every stall accepts cards.

Official network names

  • Wateen-FREE-WiFiReported name of the free network in departure lounges and concourse areas; airport signage on-site may vary — treat as indicative rather than guaranteed exact.

Connect only to these exact network names — lookalike hotspots at airports are a common phishing trick.

Good to know

  • Free Wi-Fi is available around the clock in the domestic and international departure lounges, satellite areas, and most concourse seating — just select the network and connect, no registration reported.
  • If Wi-Fi is patchy, free internet kiosks (shared terminals) are also available in the departure lounges as a backup.
  • Some VPN and messaging traffic can be throttled or blocked on public networks in Pakistan, so don't count on a VPN working reliably — download anything you need (boarding pass, offline maps) before you rely on the connection.
  • Speeds are adequate for messaging and email but can slow considerably during peak evening departure banks.
  • This is a smaller/less-documented airport online, so double-check the network name on airport signage on arrival rather than assuming it matches exactly what's listed here.
