Hong Kong International Airport: A Traveler's Quick-Start Guide

Hong Kong International Airport sits on reclaimed land at Chek Lap Kok, off Lantau Island, about 25 km from Central. For decades it ran as a single terminal (T1), but a new Terminal 2 began phasing in from May 2026, handling check-in and bag drop for around 15 regional and short-haul carriers (including Hong Kong Airlines and AirAsia). Boarding gates for T2 flights aren't open yet, though, so passengers still travel to T1 to board — an automated people mover links the two buildings during the day, with a signposted walking route overnight. Always check which terminal your airline is using for check-in versus boarding.

Immigration, customs and transiting

Hong Kong's immigration process is generally brisk — e-channels are available for eligible passport holders and residents, and queues for visitors are usually well-managed even at peak times. Customs is a simple red/green channel system. If you're transiting through HKG, it's a genuinely easy airport to change planes in: through-transit passengers often don't need to clear immigration at all, and there are transit hotels and lounges airside if you have a long layover.

Getting into the city

The Airport Express train is the fastest way to Hong Kong Island, reaching Hong Kong Station in Central in about 24 minutes, with a stop at Kowloon Station en route — both stations offer free shuttle buses to major hotel areas, and in-town check-in facilities let some airlines check your bags before you even reach the airport. Airport Express trains run roughly every 10 minutes. Budget travelers can take the A-series airport buses into Kowloon or Hong Kong Island for a fraction of the train fare, though the trip takes 45-60 minutes depending on traffic. Taxis are metered, plentiful, and take about 30-45 minutes to Central, with a surcharge for luggage and for trips through the cross-harbour tunnel.

Practical tips

Get an Octopus card (available at arrivals) for the Airport Express, buses, and virtually every shop and metro ride in the city — it saves a lot of fumbling with cash. If you're catching a connecting flight, note that HKG's sheer size means walking distances between some gates can be long, so don't cut connections too close, especially with the T2 transition still settling in through 2026 and 2027. Free WiFi throughout the terminals is genuinely fast and easy to use, so it's worth confirming any last-minute gate changes on arrival.

Official network names

  • #HKAirport Free WiFiStandard-speed free network available terminal-wide.
  • #HKAirport Hi-Speed WiFiHigher-speed free network available near specific gates/zones.

Connect only to these exact network names — lookalike hotspots at airports are a common phishing trick.

Good to know

  • No registration is needed — connect to the SSID, open a browser, go to any non-HTTPS site and tap "Agree and Continue" on the portal page.
  • Turn off mobile data/roaming before connecting so your phone doesn't silently fall back to cellular.
  • If "#HKAirport Free WiFi" doesn't show up, toggle WiFi off and on to refresh the network list.
  • Look for "#HKAirport Hi-Speed WiFi" near specific gates if you need a faster connection for video calls or large downloads.
  • For help, call the airport's WiFi hotline on 2188 7799 or visit a Customer Service Counter.

This airport uses a WiFi sign-in page

You will pass through a captive portal — a web page — before you get online. It is worth treating as untrusted: a legitimate one asks you to accept terms, enter an email or type an SMS code. It never asks you to install an update or run a command.

On a shared network, anyone nearby can see which sites you open. A VPN encrypts your traffic after you're connected, and lets you reach home banking and apps that block foreign IPs. It does not cover the sign-in page itself, or anything you're persuaded to install.
