Barcelona-El Prat Airport: A Traveler's Quick-Start Guide
Barcelona-El Prat has two terminals: T1, the larger and newer building, handles most full-service and long-haul carriers, while T2 (itself split into 2A, 2B and 2C) is older and hosts many low-cost airlines including Ryanair and Vueling's regional operations. The two terminals are about 10 minutes apart by free shuttle bus — check your boarding pass carefully, since arriving at the wrong one means a bus ride you didn't plan for.
Security, immigration and Schengen
As a Schengen-area airport, flights arriving from elsewhere in the Schengen zone skip passport control entirely; if you're arriving from outside Schengen (the UK, US, etc.), expect a passport check that's usually efficient but can back up during peak summer arrival waves. Security lines are generally manageable outside the July-August peak season, but T1's single large security hall can still get busy before the morning bank of departures.
Getting into the city
The R2 Nord Rodalies train is the fastest and cheapest link to the city, reaching Barcelona-Sants station in about 20 minutes for €4.90 — from Sants you can connect onward by metro to almost anywhere in the city. The L9 Sud metro line runs directly from both terminals into the city but takes longer, around 30 minutes with a transfer, for a slightly higher fare. The Aerobus runs 24/7 direct to Plaça de Catalunya in about 35 minutes for €7.25 one-way and is the simplest option if you're staying near the old town or Eixample. Taxis are metered, take about 20 minutes to the center in normal traffic, and typically run €35-45, with a small airport supplement added to the meter.
Practical tips
Buy train and metro tickets from machines in the arrivals hall — the T-Casual multi-trip card is worth it if you'll be using public transport a few times during your stay. If you're catching a connecting flight within Schengen, note that BCN doesn't require you to reclear security if you stay airside, but always confirm your gate on arrival since T1 gates are spread out and a walk to a distant boarding gate can take 15-20 minutes. Card payment is accepted almost everywhere, but a little cash is handy for the Aerobus or a taxi tip.
