Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino is Italy's largest airport and the home hub of ITA Airways, crossing 50 million passengers for the first time in 2025. It holds a Skytrax 5-Star rating and sits in the world's top-10 airports for its size class. The airport lies on the coast roughly 30 km southwest of central Rome, with a multi-billion-euro expansion under way — expect some construction, but the passenger experience consistently ranks among Europe's best.
Three terminals are in use: T1 handles domestic and Schengen flights and is the base for ITA Airways and its SkyTeam partners; T3 is the main international terminal for most non-Schengen and long-haul carriers; tiny T5 is used only occasionally for flights needing extra screening. Check your terminal before you set off — T1 and T3 are walkable but the building is long.
Into the city, the Leonardo Express train is the reliable default: €14, 32 minutes non-stop to Roma Termini, every 15 minutes or so. The cheaper FL1 regional (~€8) serves Trastevere, Ostiense and Tiburtina but does not go to Termini. Taxis charge a fixed €55 to anywhere inside the Aurelian Walls (luggage included) — the fare is capped by law, so ignore touts in the arrivals hall and use only the official rank. Coach services to Termini run about €7–9 and take an hour with traffic.
