Japan verschärft die Dokumentenanforderungen für Visa-Antragsteller aus Russland

The Embassy of Japan in Russia has updated the list of documents required from Russian citizens applying for a tourist visa. The visa regime itself has not changed — a visa is still mandatory and there is no visa-free entry for Russian passport holders — but the requirements for proving income and employment have been noticeably tightened. Several Russian outlets (AiF, Lenta.ru, Moskva 24) reported the update on 11 August 2026, and the revised checklist is published on the embassy's official page.

What changed

Employed applicants now need an original certificate from their employer, with a wet stamp and signature, stating their position, length of employment and salary. If the salary is not stated on the certificate, a 2-NDFL tax certificate is additionally required.

Sole proprietors, self-employed individuals and those working under civil-law contracts face a separate new document set: instead of the old business-registration and tax-registration papers, applicants must now provide a USRIP (Unified State Register of Individual Entrepreneurs) extract plus income documentation.

Students need a certificate from their place of study, pensioners a copy of their pension certificate, and unemployed applicants an original, stamped bank statement showing their balance. Minors still require a sponsor letter, proof of relationship to the sponsor, and the sponsor's employment/income certificate.

The embassy specifically notes that credit-account statements and online-banking printouts or screenshots from personal accounts are no longer accepted — only original, stamped certificates. Submitting false information can result in refusal and a six-month ban on reapplying.

How to apply

Since 12 February 2026, visa applications in Moscow are no longer accepted directly at the consulate but must go through the JVAC (Japan Visa Application Centre), operated by VFS Global. A separate, non-refundable service fee of roughly 970 RUB per applicant applies; the consular fee for Russian citizens remains free (0 RUB). Minimum processing time is 4 business days, typically 4–10 in practice.

What this means for travellers

If you're planning a trip to Japan, prepare your documents against the embassy's current checklist rather than year-old guides — outdated income proof (e.g. only old IP registration papers without a USRIP extract, or online-banking printouts instead of a stamped original) is now likely to get an application rejected at intake.
