Schiphol is unusual for a major hub in that it's technically a single terminal building, organized around three departure halls (1, 2 and 3) and a maze of connected piers (B through M) rather than separate terminals — which makes wayfinding easier than it sounds once you're inside, since everything is under one roof and linked by moving walkways. Security is centralized per departure hall, and Schengen-area flights and non-Schengen flights are handled through different pier clusters, so check your boarding pass for the pier before you start walking.
Immigration, customs and security
If you're arriving from another Schengen country, there's no passport control at all — you'll go straight to baggage claim. Arriving from outside Schengen (the UK, US, etc.) means a passport check, usually via fast automated e-gates for eligible passport holders. Security queues can build up quickly during the morning and early-evening banks of departures, and Schiphol's layout means walks between piers can be long, so 2.5-3 hours for an international connection is a sensible minimum — don't book a sub-60-minute layover here if you can avoid it.
Getting into the city
The train is by far the best way into Amsterdam: NS Intercity and Sprinter services run from the station directly beneath Schiphol Plaza to Amsterdam Centraal in about 15-20 minutes, several times an hour, for roughly €5-6 one-way with a contactless card tap-in/tap-out (or an OV-chipkaart). From Centraal, trams and the metro fan out across the city. A taxi to the center takes about 20-30 minutes depending on traffic and typically costs €45-55 — official taxi ranks are just outside the arrivals halls. Uber and local ride-hailing apps also operate normally here.
Practical tips
Schiphol Plaza, the area before security, has grocery stores, currency exchange and SIM/eSIM counters — worth using if you want a local number for public-transport apps. If your flight involves a very short layover, note that Schiphol's non-Schengen piers can be a genuine hike from the Schengen ones; check your connecting gate as soon as you land. Cash is rarely needed in the Netherlands — contactless card or phone payment is standard almost everywhere, including on public transport.
